Are New Year’s Resolutions Actually Effective?

Miranda Williams

Happy New Year! Currently it is January 3rd, 2020. It’s crazy how fast a year can go by and considering its 2020 already, the time really flew by, especially these past few months. A question I have been getting a lot as i’m sure others have been too, is “what is your new year’s resolution?”. Let me start by saying I have mixed opinions on this question.

So yes of course, it’s amazing to set goals for yourself and for you to have something to put your mind to and hopefully accomplish during the new year; however, why can’t we be doing these things all year long? What I mean by this is hypothetically, say it’s December 2019 and my new year’s resolution for 2020 is to be nicer to people and to start going to the gym. That’s great but why wait until 2020? Why not start right now? Yes it’s good knowing that the new year is a complete fresh start but we are living in the present and honestly whether you start your resolutions now or January 1st of 2020, you’ll have the same outcome, if not better since you started sooner.

No, I’m not bashing the whole idea of having these new year’s resolutions, I just believe that its misleading in a way. Instead, whenever you have a goal that you want to accomplish, start working towards it the second it comes to your mind! Setting goals for yourself is a great way to better your life. If you don’t have any goals in life, what are you really living for? Once you complete your goal(s), the feeling is amazing and totally worth the obstacles you may have had to overcome in order to get there. So make some goals and start working towards them now!
