On Thursday, April 19 at 7PM, seven male contestants competed for the glorious title of Mr. CHS. Sam Clark, Allen Davies, Justin Witwick, Bobby Morris, Garrett Kennedy, Luis Oliva, and I had to show off our talents in order to prove our worthiness of the crown. We had a total of four rehearsals, all of which were about an hour long. During those few hours, we spent most of our time rehearsing our group dance, which was “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears. Some of the time we were just goofing around and having a good time. In the remaining minutes, we had to figure out the funniest, but most appropriate, way to humor the audience. Although we were tight on time, we still managed to make it happen.

The curtains opened, and we were all in different poses. Playing in the background were our voice-overs we made during the rehearsal. They consisted of why we wanted to be Mr. CHS and why the other contestants shouldn’t be. Right after that was our group dance, and based on the audience’s laughter, it was REALLY funny to watch. Next on the program were our superhero entrances. Sam was Captain America, Allen was Spider-man, Bobby was Green Arrow, Luis was Black Panther, Garrett was Captain Cougar, Justin was Thor, and I was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. We ran up to the stage and performed a small skit in our costumes.

The main event was our talents. First up was me. I solo salsa danced to “La Vida Es Un Carnaval” by Celia Cruz with a rose in my mouth and threw it at the judges. I wore a fake mustache and sewed on fake chest hair to my undershirt to give a more hilarious effect. Next in line was Bobby. He played the drums so fast and so well that the audience’s eyes could not keep up with him. Sam acted out a monologue about how he wasn’t very fond of theater, and it was ironically hilarious and brilliant. Allen showed off his skills in martial arts and tricking by doing these insane flips and using nunchucks at the same time. Luis sang a song, but more importantly, he prom-posed to Taylor Reitzel during the show! (She said yes of course). Garrett made the audience burst into pure laughter when he performed his stand-up comedy routine. Unfortunately, some of his original jokes had to be censored, but he still killed it out there. Last, but not least, was Justin. In his suit and bow tie, he sang a Spongebob medley that the younger audience found to be entertaining and funny. The not so young audience seemed to enjoy the singing, even though they had no idea where it was from.

Before the crowning was the tux catwalk. After each of our talents, we all quickly went backstage and dressed up in our tuxes with bow ties and suspenders. Then, we were asked questions by the judges themselves, and all the questions were Mr. Vito-related. Before the crowning, three contestants were going to be awarded with either Mr. Congeniality, Mr. Photogenic, or Mr. Fan Favorite. Allen won Mr. Fan Favorite, Justin won Mr. Photogenic, and I won Mr. Congeniality. Finally, it was the moment of truth. Who was crowned Mr. CHS? The judges and the audience picked… GARRETT KENNEDY! Congratulations to Garrett for being 2018 Mr. CHS! The show raised 1000 dollars that night thanks to the support of our friends and family. It was a huge success in bringing laughter and joy for the audience.

After the show, I was able to interview some of the contestants and some of the cast involved. My experience with this show was that I had a great time with these guys. I was glad to be surrounded by a good-humoured and talented group. Allen Davies said “it was pretty fun and different. He didn’t expect to dance to Britney Spears, but enjoyed it regardless”. Mr. CHS, Garrett Kennedy, said that “he had been in a lot of shows, but Mr. CHS was a really new, fun, and interesting experience for him”. After being crowned, he said that “it really felt good to be recognized by his peers”. Oren Alexander, part of the stage crew, said “he always enjoys helping out with the shows”, and fun fact: he actually almost won the title of Mr. CHS even though he wasn’t a contender! I also want to give a huge shout out to the cast and crew for making this show possible! Lastly, special thanks to Mr. Vito for being in charge of this event. This will truly forever be a night we all will never forget, just like you said. We never would have done this without you! Thank you everyone for your support.
