During these past couple of months scarecrows were placed around Cranford downtown to enhance the Halloween and fall spirit. People of all ages were able to utilize their creativity and artistic abilities during the contest. Scarecrows ranging from fun Mario recreations to frightening killers like Freddy Kruger were all contestants for the final winners. The Barbie movie that released this past summer also inspired three scarecrows, all of which placed in the competition. Even Cranford citizens who were not able to participate in the event were still able to admire the scarecrows and enjoy strolls with them downtown.
Awards were given to various categories — an overall winner, schools and organizations, business, families, 13+ winners, and 12 and under winners. All scarecrows were extremely unique and impressive, but the one that received the most votes and crowned the overall winner was “Let’s Go Devils!” The scarecrow is the NJ Devils mascot, a spot-on representation, located near the center of downtown, making it a hotspot for great photos especially for those that are NJ Devils fans.
An honorable mention goes to the Minotaur, which was crafted together by the members of the CHS Latin Club. They are one of the only CHS clubs who participate in the scarecrow contest, becoming more and more innovative each year. The past 2 years the club has also created Atlas and the Trojan Horse, both of which placed as possible contestants for the podium.
