As Charles Dickens’ Ebenezer Scrooge learns, the holiday season is one of generosity and joy. Giving to others and your community amplifies the warmth and jubilation of the holidays. So how can Cranford High School students and staff partake in this season of giving?
Donations are a great place to begin. You can contribute to nearby food banks, such as Cranford Family Care, or clothing drives, like the Salvation Army. Giving toys to children is another great way to get involved. CHS already participates in Toys for Tots, and you can do so on your own as well. Giving what you can to those in need not only lift your own spirit, but also brightens the holidays for the less fortunate.
Alternatively, you can give back through volunteer work. Join park and river clean-ups to beautify the town, or volunteer to make and distribute food at a kitchen. An easy way to find volunteer opportunities is by joining the CHS Rotary Club, which meets every other Wednesday morning in the small cafeteria to participate in volunteer activities. It’s also a great way to earn service hours.
Service does not need to be complicated or time-consuming. It can be as simple as shoveling the driveway for a neighbor or cooking for a grandparent. Talk to someone new or write a letter to thank someone. This holiday season, assist your community so that you enjoy your break to the fullest and begin the new year on the right foot.
