The college application process is a pivotal experience for high school seniors towards higher education, while simultaneously adding a significant amount of stress to students. Juggling academics, extracurriculars, and personal life places an overwhelming amount of pressure on young adults. It comes as no surprise to many that this milestone is one of the most anxiety inducing tasks for high school students. Between colleges growing in competition each year and trying to stand out in a pool of similar applicants, students often face this process as an insurmountable and dreadful task. Compounded with the uncertainty of the admissions process itself, students often fear not receiving the outcome they were hoping for.
College is a period for tremendous personal growth. While it is critical for students to properly prepare for this, it is also important to recognize that seniors are currently experiencing the transition from childhood to adulthood. Allow yourself to celebrate what you have achieved already thus far. Too often, the typical high school student overlooks their accomplishments because the constant focus is on what’s next. Although it is important to prepare for the future, don’t be afraid to appreciate and be proud of yourself for your success.
On top of that, the advice that my older sister, a junior in college, has stressed to me is that at whichever school you attend, your college experience will undoubtedly be what you make of it. Taking advantage of opportunities in the education offered is what is going to take you and your life further. Use these years as an opportunity to practice being your own advocate, a skill that will be essential in every stage of life. Spend time joining activities, meeting new people, and working hard towards an interest/goal you are passionate about.
