As we enter the latter stages of the winter sports season, the Cranford High School Athletic teams are looking to gain momentum with state and county tournaments in the near future.
Wrestling:
The wrestling team continues to be one of Cranford’s top athletic programs. The team currently sits at 11-2 and have won eight of their last 9 matches. The teams also won the Union County Championship, their 10th in a row. Cranford gets set to head into the final third of the season with momentum and talent. The success has Cranford ranked at 19th in the state. Such dominance has become the standard under Coach Gorman as Cranford looks to add a state title to their deep trophy case.
Boys Hockey:
The boy’s hockey team has had an up and down season. After losing 7 of their first 8 games, the Cougars have seemed to right the ship and are gaining momentum. After the difficult beginning, Cranford won 5 of their next 8 and went on an impressive 3 game win streak before an overtime defeat to a 2 loss Scotch Plains team. Seniors have led the way for the Cougars this season. Senior Christian Adamski leads the team with 17 goals and Ryan Callahan leads the team with 22 assists. This has been a special season for Adamski and Callahan as they passed the 100 point mark, being the 4th and 5th players ever to do so. With goals, Griffin Geis has been the top goalie with .863 save percentage.
Girls Hockey
Year three for the girl’s hockey team has provided many challenges and successes. The team currently has a record of 3-7-2. The Cougars got off to a flying start, dominating Princeton and winning 12-2. Since the opening victory, the team went on to lose 6 of their last 8 before two convincing victories in their last three games. Emerson Murphy has led the way for Cranford with 12 goals, followed by Marren Pitts with 6. In goal, senior Emma Yager has led the way recording a .863 in 10 starts with the team. Cranford looks to end their season on the right note and gain momentum for the state playoffs.
Boys Basketball
After a great 2023-24 season, Cranford hasn’t been able to reach the same heights. Cranford began their season with a five game losing streak. After the rough stretch, Cranford has been able to find more consistent form going 5-5 in their last 10 games. There is still plenty of time left in the season for the Cougars, who still have 7 regular season games in addition to county and state tournaments. Cranford has gotten help from a variety of players. Junior Enzo Madrini and Josh Ketschke have led the Cougars in points with 151 and 146, shortly followed by Jack McGuire and Dylan Aveno with 129 and 105. Madrini, McGuire, and Aveno have led the team in assists two, and are only separated by three. The totals are 28, 27, and 25.
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball team has started their season with a 4-9 record. They started theirseason on a four game losing streak, the team has been able to find their footing. After the streak, the team recorded a 4-5 record with an impressive one point victory against a Johnson team with a winning record. Senior Bella Curanovic has led the way for Cranford. Curanovic is currently averaging 15.6 points per game and recently passed 1,000 career points. Junior Lily Costello has also had an impressive season averaging 11.2 points per game. With county and state tournaments on the horizon, there is still time for the girl’s basketball team to turn their season around.
Boys Swimming
After getting off to a flying start, the boys swimming team has cooled down a little. The team started 2-0 with dominating victories against Union and Plainfield. After the hot start, the team lost to Westfield and Summit, two great teams, before being defeated byScotch Plains and Governor Livingston. The team now sits at 2-4 with 3 meets before they begin their state tournament journey. If the Cougars can return to their form from the first two meets, they have the potential to go on a deep run.
Girls Swimming
The girls swimming team has had a phenomenal season. The team is 5-2 with their most impressive victory against Westfield. The victory was a statement, as it was the first time in their history that the Cougars were victorious against Westfield. With their talent and their record, there is no doubt that this will be a special season for the Cougars.
