After almost seven months of closure, the Cranford Theater finally reopened on November 25, 2025 with a brand new look.
In April, Cranford moviegoers were devastated when a tragic ceiling collapse forced the 99-year-old theater to close its doors. Although the collapsed showing room was luckily empty at the time of the incident, the building’s structural damage necessitated months of renovations and refurbishments.
However, just in time for Thanksgiving weekend, Cranford’s hometown movie theater returned after much community support, fundraisers, and love. The public celebrated the theater’s grand reopening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony before ticket sales began once again. During its time away, Cranford Theater underwent a number of upgrades intended to modernize the cinema while still maintaining its traditional environment, including new equipment, sound systems, furniture, and decorations.
Along with its redesign, the theater also plans to organize new initiatives in entertainment, intending for showing rooms to host community events such as live music, comedy nights, readings, book clubs, film clubs, and more. Past Cranford Theater events will still continue, such as the cinema’s upcoming Pajama Series, where attendants can enjoy a selection of festive holiday favorites in their pajamas.
As one of the last family-owned movie theaters in Union County, Cranford Theater’s triumph over tough circumstances through community support speaks to the value of small cinemas in an era of home-downloadable films and streaming services. Thankfully, despite facing hardships, a historic and cultural centerpiece of Cranford has returned to the public with an improved appearance and feel. The show must go on!
