Cranford High School is proud to present their 2025 spring musical Chicago: Teen Edition, with performances on March 7th and 8th at 7:30 pm and March 9th at 2:00 pm.
Based on the 1926 play of the same name by Maurine Dallas Watkins, Chicago opened as a musical in 1975 with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, with a script adaptation by David Thompson. The musical takes a unique approach to song and dance with its sultry Fosse style of choreography (coined by Bob Fosse himself), brassy jazz accompaniment, and dark comedy.
Chicago revels in the Jazz Age of 1920s America, and it takes place in the titular city of Chicago as it follows two female criminals, chorine Roxie Hart (played by CHS senior Molly Sample) who is convicted for murdering her illicit lover, and vaudevillian Velma Kelly (played by CHS senior Noel McNeil), who is jailed for the alleged double murder of her husband and sister. The musical is a satire on America’s corrupted justice system and a commentary on the ephemerality of fame. Audiences will watch as Roxie, Velma, their cunning lawyer, Billy Flynn (played by CHS junior Chris Uglialoro), and a brilliant ensemble of jailbirds, showgirls, and reporters navigate the tumultuous yet extraordinary world constructed by Kander, Ebb, and Fosse. Chicago’s spectacle is dazzling and its dance numbers are astonishing, and the entire show is bursting at the seams with dark wit, irresistible charm, and show-stopping performances.
Cranford High School’s production of Chicago: Teen Edition is directed by Michelle Massa and choreographed by Emma Schwartz with musical direction from CHS choral teacher Anthony Rafaniello. It’s a spectacular show you don’t want to miss. Tickets are available now on chs.booktix.net or via emailing Mrs. Elizabeth Adams ([email protected]).
